Gambling down to its very basic is a game of chance. You play the game, knowing there is a risk of losing money or something of value. Of course, there is also a chance that you might win. When you pick lottery numbers that match the numbers that are drawn, you win the lottery. The only thing that stands between you and your win is a chance. Therefore, the lottery is a form of gambling.

Is Picking Lottery Numbers Gambling or Not?

Gambling has been around for a long time, and there are references to gambling in the religious texts of all religions though it has been regulated even from the beginning. There are different types of gambling.

  • Lotteries
  • Scratch cards
  • Poker
  • Blackjack
  • Betting
  • Casino
  • Gambling Machines
  • Bingo

The lottery is also considered a form of gambling. Lottery even comes under the purview of gambling laws in some countries. Many countries though have separate rules for gambling and the lottery. There are a few considerable differences between gambling and the lottery.

In the lottery, people pay a certain amount of money to buy a ticket and compete against each other to win the lottery. The prize could be cash or merchandise of some value. What each person stands to lose is the price they paid to obtain the ticket.

Gambling, however, is a game or a mutual bet for monetary gain. The betting is made as per a set of established rules. Winning is a matter of chance, or a result of some event, or the result of a sports competition as it is with the lottery. Here also the competitors risk losing the money they have paid in, which may be considerably more than the amount paid for a lottery ticket or a few lottery books.

In the lottery, players compete against other players. The prize is pre-set, and the prize money will get divided if there are two people to share it. The lottery operator does not participate in the game and does not have a personal interest in the outcome of the game.

In gambling, each player competes against other players and the gambling operator. The gambling operator has an individual interest in the result of the game, and it is in his interest that all the players lose.

Though there are these subtle differences between gambling and the lottery, most people in the world see the lottery as a form of gambling. The money involved in the lottery may be considerably smaller when compared to gambling. What it all boils down to is that it is a pure chance to win the lottery, and there is the risk of losing money and not winning anything. This is what gambling is all about.

Just like gambling, the quality of being addicted to is authentic even in playing the lottery. People get addicted to playing hoping to win the lottery someday. They keep on playing and buying lottery books after lottery books and tickets after tickets in the hope that they will win the lottery one day. People end up with nothing but holes in their pockets, but some lucky people do win. Once again, the lottery is all about luck, and so is gambling. So the lottery is the same as gambling, and the lottery is a gamble.
